23 Oct Kinesio Taping for Injuries
What is Kinesio Tape?
The Injury Care Center provides Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioners (CKTP) that utilize The Kinesio® Taping Method with many Workers Compensation and Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) patients to aid in the care and recovery of both acute and chronic injuries.
The Kinesio® Taping Method utilizes specially developed latex-free tape that is applied to the skin of workers compensation and motor vehicle accident patients to support and provide stability to the body’s muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints without the use of bulky bracing. Kinesio Tape is safe for most populations ranging from children to adults. Kinesio tape differs from other forms of injury taping methods as these other forms of tape require additional layers of pre-tape to be applied to the skin surface. Other traditional forms of injury tape are rather stiff and can result in compression and skin irritation of the injured areas due to the large presence latex used in their manufacturing process. Kinesio tape is latex free and provides for full and unrestricted motion of injured joints and tissues. Kinesio Tape is designed to specifically mimic the outer layer of the skin known as the epidermis. When properly applied to a patient’s skin this design allows for the body to quickly desensitize itself to the fact that the Kinesio Tape remains in place while the Kinesio Tape continues to provide functional support and proprioceptive input to the patient’s body.
Kinesio Tape is designed to utilize a special heat activated acrylic adhesive that bonds the tape to the patient’s skin surface. The Kinesio Tape’s body is make out of cotton allowing for good breathability to further reduce any chance of skin irritation.

Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioners (CKTP) at The Injury Care Center have undergone a minimum of 24 hours of post graduate education in basic and advanced Kinesio Taping concepts to utilize The Kinesio® Taping Method for acute and chronic injuries sustained on workers compensation patients who were injured in the scope of their normal job duties as well as patients injured as the result of a motor vehicle accident. These injuries which can occur because of work related injury or car accident many times are orthopedic injury to a joint, muscle or tendon and can have a neurologic aspect that can include numbness or tingling into an area. Kinesio Taping can provide a supportive, non-restrictive means of assisting in your recovery.
Once applied to the skin of workers compensation and motor vehicle accident patients the tape acts to lift the superficial layers of the skin from deeper tissue to help facilitate lymphatic drainage and allowing for reduction of inflammation of injured areas. Studies have shown that Kinesio Tape can be more effective then anti-inflammatory medications in reducing pain and swelling in patients to tendinitis and bursitis. (Taner Dandinoglu, Haydar Mert Koç. (2016) Comment on “Effects of kinesiotaping versus non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy for treatment of pes anserinus tendino-bursitis: a randomized comparative clinical trial”. The Physician and Sportsmedicine 44:4, pages 342-342.) Kinesio Tape has also been shown to improve balance and proprioceptive skills and abilities in patients suffering from neurological injuries. (Effect of Kinesio taping on standing balance in subjects with multiple sclerosis: A pilot study: Marco Cortesi, Davide Cattaneo∗ and Johanna Jonsdottir LaRiCE: Gait and Balance Disorders Laboratory, Department of Neurorehabilitation, Don Gnocchi Foundation .R.C.C.S., Milan, Italy)
The Injury Care Center treats a multitude of injuries that result in orthopedic injury as the result of workers compensation and motor vehicle accidents The Kinesio® Taping Method can be beneficial in controlling and reducing post-operative bruising and edema. (Kinesiotape® Application for Postoperative Edema Management After Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Case Report James Spendley DO , Kashif Saeed MD, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL Gerard Dysico, MD, Department of Trauma, John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Chicago, IL)
Kinesio Tape is just one tool within the Injury Care Center’s “tool box”. Kinesio Tape is safe for skin application on most individuals including injured workers compensation and motor vehicle accident patients to help improve the overall time in which a patient heals. Kinesio tape can be utilized to reduce swelling and bruising as well as provide functional support to an injured muscle or joint without the use of bulky bracing limiting functional use of the injured area of region.
Patients have responded very well to the use of this system in our clinics. We are here to assist in your recovery as well.
